College of Medicine Turns 40!
The UA College of Medicine opened in 1967 with 32 students and 21 faculty members, culminating the efforts of many Arizonans who believed our state should have a medical school. Beginning with a single basic sciences building, completed in 1967 at a cost of $7 million, the UA College of Medicine has emerged as a top medical school. It is Arizona's only MD-granting college. More than 3,000 medical students have earned their degrees at the UA. About half of the College of Medicine graduates practice in Arizona at such varied sites as urban hospitals, rural clinics and American Indian reservations. Strong community support and collaboration always have been critical elements of the College's success. In August, in a historic example of statewide cooperation, The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix in partnership with Arizona State University welcomed its first class of 24 first-year medical students. This brings the number of first-year medical students in the Class of 2011 to 134.
